We work on the web

We’re now developing for Firefox 3 and IE8

The first release candidate of Firefox 3 is out and we’re impressed! It’s very fast and I can see it having a huge uptake in the firefox using community and converting even more disgruntled IE users.

But wait. There’s a new version of Inetrnet Explorer on the horizon too. IE8 is in beta and that’s looking pretty attractive too.

So what does that mean to Canary Dwarf. A new firefox, IE8 in the pipeline, and mobile browsers coming on in leaps and bounds. I expect it will not be long before Firefox 3 is our browser of choice, and we’ll be testing backwards compatibility with version 2. By default, we develop for two versions of each browser, so that’s Internet Explorer 6 and 7 (at the moment), Firefox 2 and 3, Opera 8 and 9 , and Safari 3 on Windows and Internet Explorer 5, Safari 2 and 3, Firefox 2 and 3 on Mac OS X.

All other browsers are catered for by negotiation.

Rule number one

Once again, we have had a client come to us because they can’t get their web site updated. Their web designer has gone AWOL. Not only that, they registered the client’s domain name as their own.

This is bad practice. Web site owners need to know that when things go wrong, they still have some control over their domain name. Unscrupulous web designers usually do this to maintain some kind of freaky grip over their clients, but invariably, the firms that do this are those which end up disappearing overnight and leaving the poor clients in the lurch. If you let your web designer register a domain name, make sure you make it clear that you want it registered with YOU as the owner.
